Here are dates and details for the OPD sessions in Adelaide that must be completed prior to 31 August 2009.
This year, the Compulsory session is offered via a DVD that must be purchased from Canprint in Canberra at a cost of $25.40 including postage and GST. The contact number for Canprint is 1300 656 863. Everyone must purchase their own copy of this DVD and your Authorisation Number will be recorded by Canprint at time of order. Keep your receipt, as proof of purchase must be provided to the Marriage Celebrants' Unit at the time of filing your Annual Return.
There is a requirement to participate in five hours of OPD. Viewing the DVD will count as two hours, leaving an obligation of attending additional sessions spanning at least three hours. You have a choice of viewing the DVD on your own, or attending a group session. If you have watched this DVD at home, it is possible to attend only the remaining three hours.
Following a group screening of the DVD, I will deliver the session 'Finding the Right Answers'. The intention of this activity is to help marriage celebrants
become more familiar with the resources available to them, to show them how they
might find answers to some of their commonly asked questions, and to show them
that there is often more than one way to access information. This session is one hour in length, and attendees will be asked to bring with them their copies of the 'Marriage Act 1961' and the 'Marriage Regulations 1963', plus 'Explanatory Material on the
Marriage Act 1961 for Marriage Celebrants', as these documents will be referred to during the session. Navigating the website for the Marriage Celebrant's Unit will also be demonstrated.
I will also deliver a session titled 'Operational Safety and Security for Celebrants'. To be able to deliver a high standard of service, a celebrant must operate so as to ensure, to the best of the celebrant’s ability, that he or she does not compromise personal safety, nor the health and safety of the couple, of the wedding party, and of the guests. This will require attention to the environment in which interviews are conducted, the information that is given to clients who are visiting the celebrant’s premises, and the conduct of the rehearsal and ceremony.
